"Memento Mori" will be released early next year through Columbia Records, and on July 26, 2023, Depeche Mode will also perform in Bucharest.
Depeche Mode, now consisting of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore, have announced their first album since the death of founding member Andy "Fletch" Fletcher.
Produced by James Ford and Marta Salogni, Memento Mori will include around 12 tracks and is expected to be released early next year via Columbia Records. Gahan and Gore previewed the album at a press conference in Berlin on October 4. Speaking to Rolling Stone, the duo confirmed that all the songs were written before Fletch died in May 2022.
Conceived in 2020, the album Memento Mori reflects themes inspired by the pandemic. "To me, the album has a cinematic quality to it," Gahan told Rolling Stone, noting that the music has a melancholy tone but is imbued with hope and joy. Track titles for the album have yet to be announced.
The album will be followed by a world tour starting in March, spanning North America, the UK and Europe. Thus, on July 26, 2022, Depeche Mode will also perform in Bucharest, at the National Arena. Multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordeno and drummer Christian Eigner, who used to tour with Depeche Mode, are working with Gahan and Gore on the live shows on the upcoming tour.
"Fletch would have loved this album," Gahan said in a statement on the band's website. "We look forward to sharing the album with you soon and performing it live at next year's shows."
