Frontiers/Playground
British band VEGA are Nick Workman (KICK, EDEN), vocals, Marcus Thurston, guitars, Tom Martin, bass, James Martin, keyboards, and drummer Dan Chantrey. They have not changed anything since their excellent debut “Kiss of Life” in 2010. Since then they have released “What the Hell!” in 2013 and now this the difficult third album.
They open with the title track, as I think should be customary. Style-wise they are very mature and even a bit boring compared to their stellar and fresh debut. There is a slight MAGNUM-vibe but I really don´t remember the song anymore. Neither do I remember anything but the spirited riff off “All or Nothing”. “Wherever We Are” is right on with the vocals and here MAGNUM is accompanied by U2. The first one that lingers is “Ballad of the Broken Hearted” with its “whoo´s” and radio friendly refrain. More like that please! They actually keep the good work up during the MOR of “Gonna Need Some Love Tonight” and the pomp inclined “The Fall”. But, alas, they never quite reach that level again. They almost do in “10x Bigger than Love” but it gets too simplistic for this band, “My Anarchy” lacks the spark of the debut and the closing ballad “Tears Never Dry” is perhaps too mature but as a bonus it never gets over-buttered.
Compared to the debut I miss the spark and the passion, and a bit in the refrain department. But we all know VEGA has it in them to achieve world domination. It just won´t be with this album.
