At the beginning of last year, South African Blues-Rock guitarist Dan Patlansky was still a fairly unknown name in the UK, but with his last album, Dear Silence Thieves, getting a release in the UK and Europe that changed. His album impressed fans and critics, and a tour supporting Joe Satriani won him a whole load more fans and proved to UK audiences that he's a great live performer.
Now he's back with his new album, Introvertigo. The album title comes from his feelings and insecurities being an introvert.
Blues-rock really is a wide ranging term that can cover anything from Blues with a hint of Rock, to Rock with a hint of Blues, so you're never quite sure what to expect from an artist described as Blues Rock. In the case of this latest album from Dan Patlansky, he's definitely far more Rock than Blues most of the time - there's some really good heavy Rock music here. That's not to say the Blues is missing - that's certainly not the case, instead Dan Patlansky has a sound that is hard and heavy but still has the soul of the Blues. It's a great sound and it really works well here.
As an example, "Sonnova faith" has a strong guitar riff paired with hard hitting drums that give that Rock power but still keeping a Blues feel to it. The introduction gives a hint of what to expect from the lyrics - an attack on the TV evangelists more interested in their bank balances than anything else.
It's not all hard and heavy though - songs such as "Loosen up the grip" show a different side, with it's piano and vocal intro that builds up to a lovely melodic Bluesy number.
If you like your Blues-Rock to contain a healthy dose of rock, then this album is one you can't afford to miss - this really is a great album, and is one I've been listening to a lot in the last week or so. Highly recommended.
"Introvertigo" will be released on 6th May 2016
