In 1981 Foreigner released the massively successful album "4" spent more weeks at number 1 on the US Billboard charts than any artist in the history of Atlantic Records, including AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, and went on to sell more than 9 million albums worldwide. In the UK the album may have only reached number 5 in the album charts but it did spend 62 weeks in the chart. When you look at the songs on the album it's no surprise why it was such a successful album, containing hits such as ‘Juke Box Hero,’ ‘Urgent’ and ‘Waiting for a Girl Like You’.
Now, over 30 years on, the band are releasing a live album, "The best of Foreigner 4 and more", which was recorded at the Borgata Hotel’s Music Box theatre in Atlantic City on October 3rd and 4th, 2014.
It's impressive that the album is being releaed on 5th December, just two months after the concerts were performed and recorded - someone has clearly worked hard mixing and mastering it in record time.
Seven of the tracks here come from the classic "4" album, and are performed here along with a number of other classics from the band. So we have hits like "Feels like the first time", "I want to know what love is", "cold as ice", "Jukebox hero" and more - in other words we have a superb set of songs. Most of these songs are so well known that you'd struggle to find any music lover that hasn't heard them. So it's a great setlist, so that leaves the question of how good the audio is. Well that's absolutely perfect. Everything is crisp and clear and the mix is so good that everything is nice and clear, whether it's the vocals, guitars, drums, keyboards or saxophone.
When I saw Foreigner on tour in the UK earlier this year they were really impressive and as such when this album was announced I was certainly looking forward to hearing it. Having listened to it several times, it really does give a great representation of how good they are live, and although the setlist has been tweaked to be more heavily weighted towards the "4" album than normal that's certainly no bad thing given the strength of that album. In fact it's not far off a "Greatest hits" album with the amount of classic songs on this release.
This really is an excellent live album from Foreigner who show that they are just as good live as they are in the studio. Highly recommended.
