Amid continuing hype around recent album Forever, San Francisco’s Painted Palms are pleased to announce a European Tour this April.
Whether living four states away or four blocks away, Reese Donahue and Christopher Prudhomme have always found geography has no bounds against their psych electro pop output. The two cousins grew up together in Louisiana, but started making music over the Internet when one moved to San Francisco. The virtual exchange proved to be such a fruitful method (with their first EP Canopy being personally discovered by Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes and released with Secretly Canadian) that it spurred them to continue making music this way despite ending up living in the same city. And so, the songs that formed their debut full-length Forever (released February 2014 with Polyvinyl), came together as if the musicians were still separated by 2000 miles.
Tours with Of Montreal, Braids and STRFKR around their first EP showed testament to the duo’s spacious persona – affixing themselves behind computer screens clearly has no impact on their physical affinity. With many more shows under their belt since, their songwriting and performance abilities are so inherent and compatible with each other that they can cross seas and energetically emit their blissfully buoyant tracks to live audiences as effortlessly as clicking ‘send’.
Characterised by pop structures and memorable melodies, don’t be fooled into thinking Painted Palms are a wholly sunny band. Forever can get dark particularly in its lyrics, with much of the focus centered on how it feels to be caught between the external world and one’s own thoughts. And in that moment a hint of irony is apparent, for as much as the members of Painted Palms want to get out of their own heads, they’re awfully good at writing songs that will immediately get stuck in yours.
Painted Palms’ European run is as follows:
