MANKIND’S HIT DISCO “DOCTOR WHO” THEME RE-RELEASED TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ICONIC BRITISH TV SERIES : NOVEMBER 18th
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the debut of the TV show DOCTOR WHO, British pop group Mankind’s hit disco single “Dr Who?” is being re-released in an extras-loaded collector’s edition on 18th November in 12” vinyl and CD on Mondo Recordings. The project was spearheaded by the record’s original producer, Don Gallacher. Dos Amigoz – rising stars on the production, remix, and DJing scene- have created a 2013 remix of the chart-busting single, now entitled “Dr Who? (Time Waits For No Man) by Mankind vs Dos Amigoz feat Diane Charlemagne”, bringing things bang up to date. This will be released as a download on the same day as the album “Space, Time and Beyond” and will be available from all major download sites worldwide. It will also be on the album, both formats of which will be available from all major mail-order sites.
It was in 1978 – in tandem with the series’ 15th anniversary – that Mankind took UK charts by storm when they came from nowhere to smash into the Top 30 with a disco rendition of the cult BBC TV programme’s theme music. Dr Who? went to number 25 in the UK, spending a total of 12 weeks on the chart and sold more than 240,000 copies, while the band appeared three times on Top of the Pops. Gallacher introduced the catchy single to US fans a year later when he was a Guest of Honour (together with Cybermen co-creator Gerry Davis and science fiction legend Harlan Ellison) at the first-ever DW Convention in America, held in Los Angeles in December 1979. The current Doctor, Tom Baker, and show producer Graham Williams shocked and thrilled the 3,000 attendees by flying in from London on 24 hours’ notice to appear at the event.
The new album release, titled Space, Time And Beyond, is a collector’s dream: a translucent-blue, 11-track vinyl LP with gatefold sleeve; a poster; and a booklet featuring unpublished photos of Tom Baker from the first-ever American Doctor Who convention. A CD version with 14 tracks (due to the extra space) will be released simultaneously. Both formats will be available from all major mail-order sites as well as specialist shops. Over 70 minutes of music on the CD showcases all Mankind’s recordings and includes: the original club and radio mixes; the “Cosmic Remix” made for the BBC in 1984; and the new, contemporary version “Dr Who? (Time Waits For No Man), by Mankind vs Dos Amigoz featuring Diane Charlemagne.” According to producer Gallacher:
“I awaited the backing track of the new remix with some trepidation. What if I didn't like it? Well, it arrived and I didn't like it – I absolutely loved it! These were the sounds I could only dream about in 1978”
Note: The 50th Anniversary of Dr Who is 23 11 13 and the BBC are broadcasting the 50th anniversary show as a global simulcast plus Radio 1 are running a documentary with an interview with the original producer of the record- Don Gallacher.
