  Pukkelpop

Pukkelpop is an annual music festival which takes place near the city of Hasselt, Belgium in mid-to-late August. It is held within a large enclosure of fields and woodland—between a dual carriageway called Kempische Steenweg—in the village of Kiewit, approximately 7 km north of Hasselt. It is the second largest music festival in the country after Rock Werchter, with an attendance rate of 180,000 over the course of the event in 2009. The program is noted for its wide variety of alternative music, spanning styles such as rock, pop, electronic, dance, hip-hop, punk and heavy metal. The event's organizers aim the festival to be a "progressive and contemporary" musical event. Notable acts that have performed at previous editions include Sonic Youth, The Mission, Ramones, Nirvana, The Sisters of Mercy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Metallica, Green Day, Blink 182, Guns N' Roses, Anti-Flag, Pixies, Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Nine Inch Nails and Iron Maiden. The term "pukkel" is the Dutch word for "pimple". The 2012 edition headliners were Björk, Foo Fighters and The Stone Roses.

Pukkelpop patrons who have been paying close attention to the 2013 poster have already seen several top national artists announced: electronic energy bomb Goose, the rocking riffs of the Triggerfinger trio, the warm indie sounds of the reunited Girls in Hawaii, and the enchanting beats of The Magician.

Get your tricolor flag ready to wave, because we’re adding a solid list of names to that line-up today.
School is Cool and Mintzkov will be playing exclusive summer shows at Pukkelpop, and one of Belgium’s coolest trios will be coming: Puggy! In the category ‘acts named after the frontman’, we booked the wonderfully straightforward sound of Meuris, the crazy but orchestrated chaos of Gruppo Di Pawlowski, and the Belgian-Congolese party hosted by former Starflam rapper Baloji.

The dark Wablief?! tent will have quite an impact on the intense shows of Dez Mona, Sir Yes Sir, Float Fall, Few Bits, dans dans, BRNS and The Sedan Vault. In their quest for the perfect song or the ideal sound, each and every one of these bands manages to give their tracks that familiar Belgian twist. Dig deep (literally!) for the arrival of the powerful sounds of Amenra and The Black Heart Rebellion. And these Belgian acts will be tossing musical firecrackers out through the speakers: Steak Number Eight, Spoil Engine, Raketkanon, Homer and Psycho 44. You’ve been warned!

A funkier sound can be expected from the sets by Safi & Spreej, The Happy, Delv!s, Pomrad and Vuurwerk and the DJ sets by TLP, The Oddword, A.N.D.Y. and The Whatevers. Sadly, this will also be our first year without our resident DJs Ed & Kim, who are compelled to part ways after nearly 10 runs on the Pukkelpop fields. Kim will be continuing solo under the name of Michael Midnight, your brand-new DJ for the closing ceremony in the Boiler Room on Saturday!

Pukkelpop is home to only the very best of Belgium’s winners: Compact Disk Dummies, who won first prize at Humo’s Rock Rally, current title holders of the prestigious DMC World DJ Championships The Mixfitz, Limbomania laureates Polaroid Fiction and the winners of Studio Brussels’ show ‘De Nieuwe Lichting’: Rhinos Are People Too, Soldier’s Heart and Tout Va Bien. Congrats!

Bathed in this year’s first radiant sunshine, the Pukkelpop poster is slowly crystallising into its final form. As always, the most exciting new acts are combined with established artists in pop, rock and dance. The 28th edition promises to be three days of absolute delight.

We can feel the love. Can you feel it too? Thursday means dancing like mad to the pounding bass lines of a DJ set by Rudimental, not to mention the kick-ass beats of Just Blaze. Coming to us from New York, Parquet Courts is the latest new sensation and the Canadian collective Badbadnotgood shows why Tyler, The Creator and Frank Ocean are so ecstatic about their sultry mix of jazz and hiphop. And we’ll just state for the record now: Rainy Milo is going to be big. If you saw Amy Winehouse, Jessie Ware or Florence first at past editions of Pukkelpop, this young lady from London inspire may inspire very familiar feelings. For Pukkelpoppers who love crazy, wonderful punk rock, Zebrahead will also be returning to Kiewit!

For Friday 16 August, we are pleased to announce Noah and the Whale. The band often mentioned in the same sentence as Mumford & Sons will be presenting its latest album, ‘Heart of Nowhere’. The Pretty Reckless, the solid rock band headed by Gossip Girl actress Taylor Momsen, will also be performing.

On Saturday, the Pukkelpop fields will be graced by the romantic piano tunes of the famous Russian-American singer-songwriter with the ruby-red lips, Regina Spektor. We’ll also be bringing you tons of great guitars with summer-fresh indie pop from San Cisco, dark and exquisitely written Scottish rock from Frightened Rabbit, exciting pop rock by Clock Opera and the romantic souls of I Am Kloot, who are also best friends of Elbow’s. Besides Nine Inch Nails, we will also be presenting another nineties titan of the ‘industrial versus metal’ generation this year: Filter, the band you may still know from ‘Hey man, nice shot’ and ‘Take a picture’.

We’re sadly also announcing a few cancellations. Hardcore lineup Emmure and singer-songwriter Matt Corby are cancelling their summer performances to work on their respective new albums. The Child Of Lov has decided not to perform its new album live yet, and As I Lay Dying is cancelling all its European dates, including Pukkelpop.
We’ll be back with more new names in just a few days!

Knife party!!

We still vividly remember last year's sizzling-hot Knife Party set in the Boiler Room as if it was yesterday! Electric energy surged from the DJ booth and sparked off the wildly enthusiastic Pukkelpop audience. Exactly one year later, on Saturday 17 August, they'll be returning to Hasselt to do it all over again, but even better.

The duo have had one smash hit after another, with huge tracks like 'Bonfire', 'Internet Friends' and 'Antidote', a collaboration with Swedish House Mafia. Their brand-new EP 'Haunted House' will be released on Monday 6 May, proving once again that they're excellent at mixing intense electro with tight house beats. Don't miss it!
