2009-10-19 15:17 - Review: Reeperbahnfestival 2009

So that was it, the Reeperbahnfestival 2009. 17.000 people came to the 4th edition of the club festival. 160 Bands from 20 countries on 20 stages in the middle of Hamburg’s infamous St. Pauli district.

Bands like Dinosaur Jr., Emiliana Torrini, WhoMadeWho, Bleech, J. Tillman, Biffy Clyro, Future Of The Left, King Khan & The Shrines, Eagle Seagull, Reverend And The Makers, Scams, Golden Kanine, The Tunics, Olafur Arnalds, Friska Viljor, Editors, Dear Reader, The Cinematics, Hellsongs, Fight Like Apes, The Sea, Sophia, Animal Kingdom, Molotov Jive, Telekinesis, José Gonzalez and many more.

But the highlight for many visitors were Deichkind. With their crazy show nobody could stand still in the crowded out venue. Seasick Steve was another highlight. With damaged instruments, a lot of charme and his throaty voice he took his audience on a journey to his mad life.
Friska Viljor brought a new song with them: „Wohlwill“. It’s about their very first beginning in their music carrer - and surprise surprise - it’s been in the streets of Hamburg: the Wohlwillstraße. The other songs were a firework of hits. Unfortunately there was a long queue in front of the club, but no worries, the guys will be back in November. With a new album in the luggage. And with „Wohlwill“ again.

And actually the motto is: instead of queuing - go into the next club and discover another band.

But there wasn’t only bands to see. There was a music poster convention called Flatstock Europe. For the forth time Flatstock artists were travelling via Chicago, Seattle, Austin and Toronto to Hamburg’s Reeperbahn. Besides this there was an exhibition called Popview. Popview is a music photography contest looking for the most talented newcomers. The exhibition displayed some of the best works.

Furthermore the international short film festival „Future shorts“ showcased a music-oriented program, offering visitors a wide variety of short films and music videos.

New was also the Reeperbahn Campus. It’s been a get-together for the professionals of the international music industry. Event, media and music business trainees gathered at the second Kiezkongress and attended to several lectures.

Another highlight was Ray Cokes’ daily show at the Reeperbahn Campus. He presented artists from the Reeperbahn Festival under the heading „Meet & Greet with Ray“. He interviewed the bands and they played some songs acoustic. Not only for the business people. Also „normal“ visitors could attend to these shows. Very fair.

So hopefully see you next year! When you can meet again “New International Music” as the motto says.

2009-09-22 16:01 - Announcement - Reeperbahn festival!

The Reeperbahn in Hamburg is famous for its clubs. So why don't bring it together to a festival? That's what the initiators thought 4 years ago and started the Reeperbahnfestival.
They've got them all: The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Biffy Clyro, Ash, Eight Legs, Molotov Jive, Johnossi, Juliette & The Licks, Shout Out Louds, The Sounds, Blood Red Shoes, Nada Surf and so on.
Especially before they went big like The Pigeon Detectives, Bon Iver or The Rifles.

This year the line-up sounds great aswell: Biffy Clyro, Dinosaur Jr., Editors, Friska Viljor, Deichkind, Sophia, ...
But also new bands like Bleech, Dear Reader, Die! Die! Die!, Adiam Dymott, Soma, Animal Kingdom or The Tunics are ready for their break-through.

There is something for everybody: rock, pop, indie, singer/songwriter, electronica, hip hop, soul, folk, ... And a huge outline programe. There is a exhibition called "Dancing Shoes" which shows photographs from artists like Oasis, The Cure or Editors. There are short films, a Beatles Tour, a daily show with Ray Cokes (Ex-MTV host), a music poster convention and and and.

So discover the Hypes from tomorrow in these tiny clubs in Hamburg!
