An interview with Kissin Dynamite

Review1620_kissin_dynamite_2

Ant May from Festivalphoto spoke to Jim Müller and Hannes Braun from Kissin Dynamite outside the Crobar in London where they had just done a short acoustic set to press and members of the public as part of their promotional tour to promote their new album, Money Sex and Power

Festivalphoto: You're currently on a promotional tour to promote your new album, "Money sex and Power", and have just done a great acoustic set here at the Crobar in London.

Kissin' Dynamite: It's actually our first international promo tour and we're here in ENgland for one day, tomorrow Stockholm and the day after we have two days in Paris

Festivalphoto: OK for anyone who hasnt listened to Kissin Dynamite before, how would you describe your music?

Kissin' Dynamite: It is sleaze metal, because we combine the two main influences of our band which is on the one hand traditional German heavy metal - The Scorpions, Accept, or even British ones like Judas Priest, and on the other hand its American sleaze rock bands like Motley Crue, Guns'n'Roses, Aerosmith, Skid Row, and we mixed it up and what comes out is sleaze metal.

Festivalphoto: Your new album, Money sex and power is due to be released on 26th March. How would you compare it to your previous album?

Kissin' Dynamite: I would say Money Sex and Power is the catchiest, hookiest album that we ever did because we really focussed on the songwriting, because we firstly sat there talking about music before making the music because we know this third album is really going to make it or break it. It's a very important album for a rock bands career of course.
You know a band has to ask itself questions sometimes - where are you going and what are you? We thought about that and the difference between the first albums.. the first album is trying to find ourselves, we tried a lot and did what we wanted to do, so lets do an ACDC song, lets do a Judas Priest type riff, stuff like that, but it's not Kissin' Dynamite. Kissin' Dynamite is now Sleaze metal and we know what we want to do and where we are going. I think it's much more powerful and much more independant from our sound on the previous albums, because I would say we have now found the Kissin' DYnamite style. You listen to the first minute of a song and you say "that's Kissin' Dynamite". That's why we experimented with many things, to find our own style.

Festivalphoto: What's the song writing process in the band - is it a collaborative thing or are there one or two main song writers?

Kissin' Dynamite: We write songs everywhere. I write songs on the toilet, we write on tour, all the time we write songs or ideas, and then we have some songwriting sessions where we sit down together or in groups, and with our producer team from Elephant music in Germany, and all the ideas come into one big melting pot then we pick out the best ideas and make the songs out of them.

Festivalphoto: You're touring Germany in April and May with JBO. Are there any plans for dates outside Germany? The UK perhaps?

Kissin' Dynamite: No we're not only doing Germany. You're right that we are just playing Germany in April and May, but in the summer we will do a lot of festivals, for example Masters of Rock festival in Czech republic and a fsetival in Verona, Italy, but in the Autumn, and this is important, we are going to go on a big European tour as support act for a band that I can't tell you right now because it's not 100% confirmed, but I can tell you it's going to be MASSIVE. Two weeks UK touring and 8 weeks in Europe as well - we're on the next level. We really go international with the new record - that's the idea.

Festivalphoto: Hopefully you'll get some time to see the various countries you visit then.

Kissin' Dynamite: Not like today. From Heathrow we went to the hotel, from there to the Crobar, then we go to Heathrow and Stockholm - that's our time in London for you. I've never seen Buckingham Palace and I didn't get to see it today. No we've seen nothing, really nothing. But that's a rock stars life for you. The Crobar is nice though.

Festivalphoto: Hopefully with the summer festivals you'll get a few more dates added

Kissin' Dynamite: I'd like to play the Download festival, which is why I say to every Kissin' Dynamite fan out there in the UK, "Buy our new record Money sex and power, because then the promoters of Download festival should get interested in us and book us". That's my big dream when it comes to the UK, not Buckingham palace, not the queen, its the Download festival.

Festivalphoto: You listed Accept as one of your influences, so who do you prefer as their singer, Udo or Mark Tornillo?

Kissin' Dynamite: Of course Udo, that's our clear decision because Udo was Accept, and Accept isnt really Accept anymore since Udo left. They're still great but not the same. It's still great rock or metal music but as Udo has gone, Accept for me hasnt existed any more.
Udo is also our Grandpa so to speak, our Metal Grandpa, because he always has good advice for us, he's kind of a close friend for us, we skype with him a lot, we get invited to his home.

Festivalphoto: It must be great to have someone with so much experience who can give you advice.

Kissin' Dynamite: Absolutely. You've got to do your own thing, but you also have to keep in mind what Udo says. He taught us many lessons in rock so to speak.

Festivalphoto: Which do you prefer and why - CD or legal mp3 downloads ?

Kissin' Dynamite: No mp3 downloads because this is a waste of value. Vinyl I love, but I don't have a vinyl player, that's why I only buy CDs. I love to have those special box sets actually. OK maybe I can buy two CDs less in the month but then I have something special.

Festivalphoto: Is there a box set of your new album?

Kissin' Dynamite: Yeah definitely, we will have a special edition box set which is a poker case with limited edition of the album which is signed by each band member, and in the poker case there are some poker chips with our heads on and they sparkle in the light, there is Aerican poker cards, biros in the shape of machine guns, it's awesome, I saw it already and I really need to have one for myself.

Festivalphoto: What was the last album you bought?

Kissin' Dynamite: The last song I bought was Steven Tyler - It feels so good....what was the last album. My last was Dominator by U.D.O. but I will buy Van Halens new record and the Ministry one
