Performance, Carnival Workshops & Exotic Encounters

Mexican wrestling, extreme ice cream, a chance to learn how to dance flamenco and build floats and a cocktail bar in an ambulance. These are just some of the delights on offer at Standon Calling this summer.

CARNIVAL TIME
On the Saturday The Cuban Brothers will lead the Standon Calling Carnivale replete with floats, samba beats, outrageous outfits and lots and lots of drums. For those of you who want to get involved we're inviting all festival-goers to arrive to site early and take part in flamenco dancing, float building, piñata making and voodoo ritual workshops. The procession will end in front of the main stage at 5pm to coincide with the fancy dress competition.
MEXICAN WRESTLING
The pre-festival workshops aren't the only place to explore 'Lost in Latin America'. Lucha Britannia will be running Mexican Wrestling training camps at the festival. A unique hybrid of circus, cabaret, side show and theatre, the Lucha Britannia team will be both wrestling in live tournaments as well as teaching you how to grapple. After the entertainment why not head over to enjoy a themed cocktail in our Mescal Ambulance Cocktail Bar.

CANTINA TALKS & WORKSHOPS
Over in our on-site pub, Salon will be running a series of themed talks and workshops. Join a Chilean percussion and singing workshop, a tango session from the Corrientes Social Club, a samba drumming session and do some Capoeira. Talks are courtesy of Peter Culshaw, the author of Clandestino: In Search Of Manu Chao and chocolatier Sara Jayne Stanes, who will compare chocolates made from beans across Latin America.

COMEDY AND THEATRE
Then there's The Spectacular Spectrum of Now, who provide some of the most eclectic and eccentric comedy around. They'll bewilder your brain with comic treats, in the form of audio clips, comedy shorts, live acts and musical merriment.

If you're a bingo fan, check out Indeedy Musical Bingo. It's like normal bingo, but with songs instead of numbers! Compete to win prizes ranging from sandwich toasters and inflatable bananas to vintage records and champagne!

Rounding out the immersive theatrical experience is Le Tragic Boutique. One festival goer at a time is taken into an unusual beauty salon where they will be treated to a unique, bespoke physical transformation. Who knows what will happen or how you will look when you emerge. One thing is certain, this is a makeover you won’t forget!

TAKE TO THE SKIES
Finally, for the best view of the festival head to the aerial trapeze. Here, Gorilla Circus are offering anyone with a taste for adventure the chance to sample the high life with the daily 'Try 'n' Fly' sessions with no pre-booking necessary. The more ambitious can pre-book 1.5 hour classes, where beginners learn basic tricks on low bars before working their way up to being caught by an instructor on a separate swinging bar.

See you at the front at Standon 2014!
Alex Trenchard

A New Secret Dance Area featuring Shy FX, Toddla T, Kode9, Julio Bashmore, DJ EZ, Oneman and many more is coming to Standon Calling this summer.

Meantime Discovery Stage
A collaboration between Standon Calling and London’s finest craft brewer, the Meantime Brewing Company, the Meantime Discovery Stage will bring together some of the hottest names in electronic music. Revealed on the Friday night after the main stage closes it will entertain late-night revellers until the early hours on each night of the festival. In fitting with the ‘Journey to the Ends of the Earth’ theme you will have to discover the secret area for your self. it won't be on any of the site maps.

“Our 2012 theme is all about discovery and adventure. We will be embarking on a Journey To The Ends Of The Earth in search of the very best in bass music,” says Standon founder Alex Trenchard. “This stage is going to explode when it is revealed on the Friday night and we aim to create as much anticipation and speculation as to its location at the festival.”

One of the UK’s best underground club brands, Spectrum are in charge of proceedings on Friday night and their multi-genre remit promises a line-up that will cause serious bass bin damage. Leading the charge is a true innovator and pioneer: drum ’n’ bass don Shy FX. Alongside him are BBC Radio 1 favourite and all-round smasher Toddla T, while party-people Union, Spectrum founder and resident Pete Jordan and Neil Navarra (powered by Skullcandy).

Having been voted one of the best club nights of 2011, Audio Doughnuts bring a unique take on dance music to Standon on Saturday. Twisting and turning through house, disco, funky garage, synth-led hip hop and bass music, they bring renowned underground producer Kode9, super-hot, bass-house fusionist, Julio Bashmore, bass upstarts Dark Sky, London trio LV and Deep Teknologi’s house genius T. Williams. Then there’s Pusherman, Rinse FM’s Shox and Boiler Room favourite TOYC, plus Teeza, Orgy Banton and AD residents.
On Sunday Urban Nerds bring their arsenal of underground bass bombs to the stage! They bring a slice of London warehouse madness to the Hertfordshire countryside with legendary UK garage pioneer, DJ EZ, dubstep and garage evolutionary Oneman, UK funky don Marcus Nasty, Urban Nerds resident Rattus Rattus and Daddy Nature.

Second Wave of Acts Announced

New Acts
One of California’s finest dance-punk exports, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), are returning to these shores for their only UK festival appearance of the summer to play Standon Calling! Their live shows are about freedom of expression, no-nonsense unadulterated punk and pure escapism. Meanwhile, Crazy P brings one of the UK’s best dance music shows to the stage, a showcase punctuated with brilliant pop, eclectic disco and soulful rhythm funk that’s sure to get Standon moving. Then there’s electro-funk enthusiast Greg Wilson, a true DJs’ DJ, who’ll close the festival on Sunday, plus Colleen ‘Cosmodelica’ Murphy, an eclectic and experimental DJ and producer.

Willy Mason has promised us an extra-special performance, while competing in an unofficial ‘party-off’ will be some of the world’s best reggae party-makers in Trojan Sound System against The Nextmen feat. MC Wrec. Expect anything from dancehall, drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep to reggae, roots, UK funky, indie and leftfield. And expect it to go off.

Bristol-based Turbowolf venture into psych-rock; London-based reggae and dub upstarts The Skints offer an all-singing, all-dancing punky-reggae party and lo-fi London duo BIGkids promise samples, saxophones and singalongs. Plus there’s low-tempo electronic house music from Figures, seven-piece soundscapes from Revere, folker Beans on Toast, Belakiss, who’ve recently supported Kasabian, Golden Fable and slick rock ‘n’ rollers The Fabulous Penetrators.

Standon Calling Headliners And First Acts Announced

We are very excited to announce that Death in Vegas, Beardyman and Fat Freddy’s Drop will headline Standon in 2012! We think it’s the strongest group of main stage headliners we’ve ever had. Right from the start there’s been a real buzz about Standon 2012 and it feels good to announce headliners who reflect it.

Tickets
Early Bird Tickets sold out faster than ever before but we really want to make sure that Standon is the best value three day festival out there. So for 2012, we’re reducing our three-day Weekend Tickets to £99. Two-Day Tickets are £78, while Day Tickets are also on sale at £25 (Friday) and £39 (Saturday or Sunday). Gates will open on Friday 3rd August.

Line-up
Rock meets electronica with Death in Vegas’s headline set. Expect a stunning audio-visual spectacle featuring minimal beats, emotive lyrics, throbbing basslines and pumping techno. Just what you want on a Saturday night from a band that continue to sound as fresh and current as they did 10 years ago. Beatbox, MC and all-round vocal genius, Beardyman promises a non-stop, unpredictable show that’ll be impossible to label. And then to close the party on Sunday with their own brand of dub-funk-reggae are Fat Freddy’s Drop – the kiwi “seven headed soul monster” who continue to sell out venues the world over.

Other highlights on the main stage include Casiokids (memories of 2010 still has us jumping), Field Music (who are planning to jam with Stealing Sheep on the Saturday), Dub Pistols (better save some energy for Sunday), Gabby Young & Other Animals (who'll also judge the fancy dress) and King Charles (MTV’s brand new for 2012 ‘one to watch’). In the extended Cowshed, Richard Norris’s (The Grid, Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve) latest psychedelic project, The Time and Space Machine, are very special guests.

But this is only the start. We will be announcing a second wave of artists in March, not least of all the DJs who’ll be helping you party to the early hours in the Cowshed, brought to you by the same team behind 2011’s infamous Horsebox. And keep an eye out for a whole heap of interactive, theatre and arts announcements coming soon. And don't forget the theme. We're announcing it next week on Thursday 8th March. It's incredible how integral to the festival it's become over the years, with some regulars seemingly more excited about it than the line-up itself.

The big question will be what will you wear in 2012?
